Need something to celebrate?

April 9, 2013

By Lindsey Wilkie

If you use Facebook, or the internet, or have acquaintances with access to e-mail, you’ve no doubt been made aware of the recent holidays. No, not St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, or Passover; I’m referring to National Chocolate Caramel Day (March 19th), National French Bread Day (March 21st), National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day (March 24th), and who could forget Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (March 26th), to name a few.

When did all these holidays appear? Or, have they been around all along and I’ve simply been ignoring them for the better part of three decades? (I’m not sure which is worse.) Every one of them feels like a marketing ploy, but they’re so specifically targeted, only a select few businesses gets to make use of them once a year. Not the greatest strategy, in my opinion. Perhaps instead of celebrating on March 26th to create “National (name anything, literally) Day”, you could go door-to-door chatting with neighbors and passing out cupcakes. Your return on investment will probably be the same.

To ensure that none of these valuable holidays are missed, here’s just a taste of what we have coming up in April:

04/02: National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day
04/03: National Walking Day (in preparation for…)
04/05: National Walk to Work Day
04/06: International Pillow Fight Day (Deserves some emphasis.)
04/07: International Beaver Day; National Beer Day
04/08: National Empanada Day
04/09: National Be Kind to Lawyers Day
04/10: National Farm Animals Day; National Cinnamon Croissant Day
04/11: International “Louie Louie” Day (That will get old quick.)
04/12: National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day (FYI: April is National Grilled Cheese Month)
04/14: International Moment of Laughter Day (Note that this isn’t scheduled during the work week. Not billable.)
04/16: National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day (Noted.)
04/17: Bat Appreciation Day
04/18: National High Five Day
04/20: Lima Bean Respect Day
04/21: National Chocolate-covered Cashews Day
04/22: National Jelly Bean Day
04/23: St. George’s Day; Talk Like Shakespeare Day (Beware when scheduling meetings, this will be a challenge for all parties involved.)
04/25: Hug a Plumber Day
04/26: Hug an Australian Day
04/27: National Prime Rib Day
04/28: Biological Clock Day (I’m not making these up.)
04/30: National Honesty Day

Amidst this downpour of holidays, let’s not forget the standards:

04/01: April Fools Day
04/15: Tax Day (Only qualifies as a holiday if you’ve already filed your taxes.)
04/22: Earth Day
04/24: Administrative Professionals Day (Formerly known as Secretary’s Day.)
04/29: Zipper Day (What, you don’t celebrate that every year?)

Feel free to beat your friends and acquaintances over the head with your now-extensive knowledge of April holidays, and celebrate accordingly all month long. You are welcome.
